What is Formula 1?
Formula 1 (F1) is the highest class of international open-wheel single-seater racing, sanctioned by the FIA, motorsport's global governing body. - Sunday — The Grand Prix: The main event, typically around 305 kilometres (190 miles) or roughly 90 minutes of racing, whichever comes first, started from the grid set in Saturday qualifying.
Every car is impounded under strict "parc fermé" conditions from the moment qualifying begins until the race starts — meaning teams can no longer make major set-up changes without dropping down the grid as a penalty. The cars: power units, aero and tyres
Every current F1 car is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid "power unit" producing roughly 1,000 combined horsepower once its energy recovery systems are included. The points system explained
Formula 1's scoring rewards the top ten finishers in every Grand Prix on a descending scale: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 points for 1st through 10th. A bonus point goes to whichever driver sets the race's fastest lap, but only if they finish inside the top ten — a rule designed to stop backmarkers pitting for fresh tyres purely to steal the point late on.
Sprint races, held at a limited number of rounds each season, use a shorter points scale of 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the top eight finishers, awarded entirely separately from Sunday's Grand Prix points.
